We're launching subscriptions!
And thank you for three years :)
Dearest readers,
Three years ago, I remember pitching Gutes and Meg for an article. I was a junior in high school. I didn’t know much, but when they emailed me back to ask me to write a column, I knew it was the beginning of something special. I’m always blown away by the community that has sprung from such a special publication that I care for so dearly. So thank you for three years of love <3
As Byline has grown and continues to grow over the years, we’re excited to announce we’re launching subscriptions. At $5 a month, you’ll get access to literally ev
erything we’ve ever published online. Thank you for supporting the community of writers, artists, and creatives that you’ve helped us foster over the years. We’re so grateful for all of you who love indie and print media as much as we do!
In this newsletter, we’re asking people about all the little things they love to pay for and the subscriptions that make their life better, lovelier, more fun, etc. Maybe you can pick up a new subscription along the way ;)
Cheers to three more years—and many more to come!
Yours,
Julia
PS. If Byline were a toddler, she would be able to walk, talk, run, jump, and (according to Google) use utensils. Wild.
Subscription Notes
JULIA ROSE ENG: I subscribe to the Paris Review, which is also $5 a month. My sugar-free vanilla iced latte was a solid $6.50, even with my student discount. I hope to pick up a museum membership soon…maybe the Neue Galerie or the Frick?
GUTES GUTERMAN: I’ve got a pinky toe in the manosphere. Don’t quote me on that. But for the low price of I don’t even know, I have subscriptions to Seed, AG1, ClassPass, and my yoga studio. I also recently got into “Subscribe & Save” on Amazon for cat food and cat litter. I’ll subscribe to anything that “optimizes” my life, or promises a better way forward.
MEG O’SULLIVAN:
The New Yorker: one of the last meaningful legacy media names of our time. $1 per week.
The Cutting Room Floor on Patreon. Recho started the podcast 8 years ago and to this day, she’s the only one asking real questions in the retail industry. $6 per month.
My friends’ substacks. Anywhere between $5-$8/month. Because I want them to keep doing it!!!!
ALI ROYALS:
NY Mag: it’s $1! One would think you can’t put a price on insane stories such as their financial editor getting scammed, but you can. And it’s a dollar.
American Style by Biz Sherbert: it’s the perfect newsletter. What real people are really wearing without a PR company influencing what she’s writing about. I will support for less than the price of an Abraco iced latte.
Bret Easton Ellis Patreon: my goat for life. For $7 I get to hear his unfiltered thoughts on anything and everything? I would pay $10k for this. Don’t tell him or he will raise the prices
DANYA ISSAWAI: Whatever catches my eye at any given moment and then I forgot to unsubscribe. The only intentional choice I make is paying for YouTube Premium every month. I’m still paying for my gym membership in the East Village, and I moved two years ago….
SASHA ROSENBERG: I stay subscribing to Substacks but I have to RLYYY love the writer or I ain’t doing it. Current subscriptions include but are not limited to Cat Marnell, Amanda Lee Burkett and From, Suea.
RACHEL BELL: What I choose to subscribe to is based on what i think will enrich my life or the lives of others—through joy or tools or non-profits. what i choose to unsubscribe from is based on how hard they make it. Like I’m not going to the post office to mail a letter to Planet Fitness to cancel my account.
(Editor’s note: Rachel also sent us this spreadsheet that was too impressive not to include)
